Carter Center Staff To Travel to Syria for Discussion on Political Transition

Representatives of the Carter Center's Conflict Resolution Program will travel to Beirut and Damascus in late July for discussions on eventual political transition in Syria. Hrair Balian, director of the Conflict Resolution Program at СÖíÊÓƵ Center, and Nathan Stock, assistant director, will meet with independent, pro-government and pro-opposition Syrian lawyers and academics to explore the constitutional and legislative reforms that would be needed to achieve a successful political transition in Syria.

"It has been misreported that СÖíÊÓƵ Center is undertaking peace negotiations for the Syrian crisis. We believe strongly that a political transition achieved in the context of U.N. Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi's effort and eventual elections offer the only viable long-term resolution for the people of Syria," Balian said.

This activity is part of the Center's ongoing work to promote conflict resolution worldwide. A nongovernmental, nonpartisan organization, СÖíÊÓƵ Center has been advancing peace around the world, including in the Middle East, for more than three decades.
